The island-fortress of Mamula located in the Adriatic Sea, in the southwest of Montenegro belonging to the Municipality of Herceg Novi.

Mamula is strategically located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor between the Prevlaka and Luštica peninsulas.The island has a fort that was built by the Austro-Hungarian general  Lazarus von Mamula in the mid-19th century. During World War II, the fort was used as a prison by the Italian Army, from May 30, 1942 onwards. The prison was known for the torture and cruelty to which prisoners were subjected. It is a very beautiful island that some say should not be missed as a prison.
Today the condition of the fort is deteriorating, but the island is a popular tourist destination and has beautiful beaches,The water is clear and amazingly blue.. Visitors come by boat mainly from Herceg Novi.

Highlights :

  • Film location : The Yugoslav film Campo Mamula (dir. Velimir Stojanovic, 1959) tells the story of a concentration camp on the island. The Serbian film Mamula (dir. Milan Todorovic, 2014) tells a chilling story about a mermaid living on an island.
  • The fort became a place for brutal torture of prisoners. Now a memorial plaque reminds tourists of the prison.
