Kanli Kula is a fortress in the picturesque city of Herceg Novi in Montenegro. It is located on a hill in the northern part of the Old Town. The name of the fortress can be translated from Turkish as “Bloody Tower”.
The first mentions of the Kanli Kula fortress appeared in historical documents of the 17th century, in the notes of the Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi, who visited the city in 1664, however, the fortress was built much earlier – around the middle of the 16th century
The internal dimensions of the fortress are 70 m by 60 m, the thickness of the walls in some places exceeds 20 m. Different masonry and different types of loopholes show how the fortress has changed over the centuries.
