Navagio Beach , or Shipwreck Beach, is an exposed cove, sometimes referred to as “Smugglers Cove”, on the coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Islands of Greece. Navagio Beach was originally known as Agios Georgios. On 2 October 1980, a freightliner, the MV Panagiotis, ran aground in the waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach during stormy weather and bad visibility.
It has been rumored the ship was smuggling contraband such as cigarettes and wine. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that now bears the nickname Shipwreck.
Access : Coordinates: -37.8578, -159.3733 / Access to the beach is only from the sea by boat from the port of Agios Nikolaos Volimes, or Porto Vromi, or by cruising the island by boat, the cruise ship. Most boats start from the port of Zakynthos, and some more from the beach of Laganas. / By car : For those who want to go by road to see the beach, they will first go to the village of Anafonitria in Zakynthos and then to the monastery of Agios Georgios of the Groves. Below the monastery there is an iron platform, literally in the air, overlooking the beach and the surrounding coast.
