Roanoke Island is an island in Dare County off the coast of North Carolina in the United States.
The island is located along the coast of North Carolina. About 19 km long and about 5 km wide, Roanoke is located between the mainland and the Outer Banks, the external barrier of islands that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the salty waters of the internal lagoons, called the Sound. To the north is Albermarle Sound, to the east is Roanoke Sound, to the south is Pamlico Sound, and to the west is Croatoan Sound. The cities of Manteo to the north and Wanchese to the south are located on the island.
On the one hand, the first English settlement in North America was located here and it was the site of the Battle of Roanoke Island in February 1862. and on the other hand, the island is known for the mysterious disappearance of over 100 English colonists towards the end of the 16th century.
