Rocce rosse

On the central – eastern coast of Sardinia,Italy .

in the bay of Arbatax there is a breathtaking beach formed by red cliffs on a background of white rocks.It is the beach of Rocce Rosse and owes its particularity to imposing red cliffs that sprout from the water. The high red granite rocks seem to form an imposing rock cathedral, giving visitors a unique spectacle.

The beach is characterized by rocks of white rock that enhance even more the red color of the porphyry cliffs. On this beach was set the final scene of the film “Travolti from an unusual destiny in the blue sea of “August” by Lina Wertmuller. The Rocce Rosse are located in the town of Arbatax which is part of the municipality of Tortoli.

this corner of paradise attracts numerous divers every day. Not too far from Rocce Rosse you can reach Cala Moresca, a beautiful pebble beach that takes its name from the raids of the 8th century Saracen pirates. The beach of Rocce rosse is reached from the panoramic road SS 125 in the direction of Arbatax, up to the sign of Rocce Rosse. Ample parking is available, also suitable for campers.

Ships dock in the harbour of the picturesque fishermen’s village of Arbatax  together with the small airport, they make up the entrance doors to Ogliastra and the eastern part of Sardinia, easily reachable from Cagliari and Olbia as well.

Get around : By bus : Regular, cheap buses between the main centres: Cagliari, Sassari, Olbia, Santa Teresa Gallura, Alghero, Nuoro etc. You may end up changing buses (or trains) in, for example, Macomer. Less frequent buses, but worth persevering for the smaller villages.
By train : Railway network of Sardinia (standard gauge — dark green)
Trenitalia runs regular trains on the standard gauge tracks between Sassari, Olbia and Cagliari. ARST also operates a few railway services on the narrow gauge lines: Alghero-Sassari-Sorso, Macomer-Nuoro, Monserrato(Cagliari)-Mandas-Isili. These trains can be not that fast, frequent and convenient. For example, the terminus in Alghero is at the quite of the edge of the centre. So, regional buses could be an alternative.
By car : It is possible to get around Sardinia by bus and train, but if you can, hire a car. It is well worth the outlay, and it will allow you to visit some of the more remote and enchanting places and areas.
By boat : Sailing is one of the best ways to see Sardinia. Most charters offer many options from bareboat to crewed and cabin charter, with various types of boats being available.
By bicycle : At many places it is possible to rent a bike quite cheaply, for as little as €9 per 24 hours. Compared to the scarce local bus connections a bicycle provides great flexibility for local exploration. With high quality roads and great scenery the bike is very pleasant to ride.
