San Nicola is an one of the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic Sea in the province of Foggia in the Italian region Apulia.
With an area of 42 hectares, it is the second largest island in the archipelago after San Domino.San Nicola belongs administratively to the municipality of Isole Tremiti and depends on the province of Foggia in the Puglia region. The island has been part of the Tremiti Islands Marine Nature Reserve since 1989, created with the aim of protecting the flora and fauna of the archipelago. In 1996, the Tremiti Islands Marine Nature Reserve was integrated into Zone 1 in the Gargano National Park. It is the most important island of the archipelago historically, religiously and administratively.
San Nicola is the only island inhabited all year round the population lives mainly in the southern part. Boats from Ortona, Termoli and Vasto also arrive here. The town hall, post office and first aid station are located on the island.San Nicola It’s famous for its Castello dei Badiali (Castello Angioino) and the Abbazia di Santa Maria a Mare – the abbey of S. Maria a Mare, the largest abbey in the Mediterranean on the sea, whose origins are lost in legend.
