Stavanger

Stavanger is a town and  in southwestern Norway, the administrative center of the Ruhalan district. Stavanger is called the Norwegian Oil Capital.
In 1125, the city was founded by King Sigurd Jursalfar as a bishopric. But only in the 19th century, when new fishing techniques and larger vessels allowed fishing on an industrial scale, Stavanger grew but to noteworthy size. In 1800, the city had around 2,000 inhabitants, but 60 years later it was already around 15,000. The fish industry created new jobs in shipbuilding, in the manufacture of equipment for deep-sea fishing, and not least also established a new industry: the production of canned fish.

This town of just over 100,000 inhabitants has some of the most incredible natural attractions in the country. In 2008 Stavanger was European Capital of Culture.

Stavanger station, Sentralstasjonen, Jernebaneveien 3, is the terminus of Sorlandsbanen, which runs from Oslo via Sandnes, Egersund and Kristiansand along the south coast. The train station is centrally located, the way to the city center can be reached on foot in 5 minutes.
/ By bus :
Starting from the central bus station Byterminalen at the station various local and intercity buses run in all directions of the surroundings. There is even a long distance bus to and from Hamburg via ferry via Kristiansand and Hirtshals in Denmark./
By plane :
The airfield of Stavanger is located in the neighboring municipality Sola. Departure of the airport bus from the central bus station Byterminalen at the station, Steig 2, or from the landing stage of the Fjord ferry at the Fiskepirterminalen. Cost: 60 or 30 NOK./
By bicycle :
Stavanger is located on the North Sea Coast Cycle Route, also known as Eurovelo 12. The bike path leads from the Swedish border along the Norwegian south coast via Kristiansand (387km) and ends in Bergen. He usually runs in parallel with the national bicycle route 1 “Sykkelrute 1”.

Get around : Most of the approximately 25 local bus lines go to the central bus station Byterminalen at the station. There are also timetables and line maps to obtain, as well as in the tourist information.

• Old Stavanger – Gamle Stavanger, West Old Stavanger West of inner harbor, or the Straen as the area is also called, is Northern Europe’s best-preserved wooden buildings .Studies show that on the sites where there are houses today, the construction took place in the period 1820-1840. is also often cited as what is probably Stavanger’s oldest house, after the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Chapel. It is believed to have been built in the early 18th century, but may also have been built as early as the late 17th century.

The curious cat Petro serves as a guide through the museum’s science centre.

•  Norwegian Canning Museum , Ovre Strandgate 88, Open : 10:00 am – 7:00 pm , In this authentic factory environment, the production of canned brisling and fish balls can still be seen. From the 1890s to approximately 1960, the canning industry was Stavanger’s most significant trade. The exhibition provides insight into the environment and the working conditions of the canning factories. The complete process, from the arrival of the fresh fish until the cans leave the factory,
•  Ovre Holmegate- fargegata , – A colourful street in the centre of Stavanger where all buildings have been painted in fresh vibrant colours -Stavanger is also known for its colorful streets full of atmosphere. This, without any doubt, is the prettiest in the city. And it has been since not long ago. In 2005, hairdresser Tom Kjorsvik radically changed the landscape and decided to paint all the houses on the street according to a color scheme suggested by the artist Craig Flannagan.

• Stavanger Cathedral , Haakon Viis gate 2, The church was built in Anglo-Norman style in the year 1125, probably by English craftsmen. The church’ patron saint is St. Svithun, and it is reputed that his arm was one of the church’ original relics. In 1272 the cathedral was damaged by fire, after which it received a new chancel built in the Gothic style. Stavanger Cathedral is the only Norwegian cathedral from the Middle Ages that has retained its original appearance and been in constant use. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 11am-7pm, June-Aug. •  Stavanger Maritime Museum ,Strandkaien 22,Open : 11:00 am – 3:00 pm , Acitivity exhibition for children. Stavanger Maritime Museum also owns the historical vessels Anna af Sand and Wyvern, operated by volunteer crews.the development of shipping, commerce and shipbuilding over the last 200 years. Sail loft, shipping company office, general store and merchant’s apartment.
• Valandstarnet , view point , It is a small tower and in the earlier years used as a house for a fire guard. It served also as a water reservoar. , 10 min walk from city center , Top of old pool with 365 degree view over city senter
• Skagenkaien , Skagenkaien is a street in Stavanger that runs along the eastern side of Vagen from Torget in the south to Ovre Holmegate in the north,In the evening and night time, Skagenkaien with its many nightclubs, pubs, bars, restaurants and nightlife is perhaps the city’s liveliest street. There are also several hotels, shops and offices in the old 19th-century seahouses.
• Paseo por la calle , The Old historic waterfront , scenic row of timber buildings The area had numerous restaurants and bars to choose from, if you wanted a drink or a bite to eat, along the quayside area
• Valbergtarnet , The Valberg tower (Valbergtarnet) was constructed in 1850. The architect was Chr. Grosch. The tower was the permanent lodging of the watchmen in Stavanger,The last guard was Tobias Sandstol. He was a watchman in 18 years until the year 1922. The famous childbookauthor Torbjorn Egner knew about this Tobias when he was writing his story about Kardemommeby (the town of cardamom),Valbergtarnet has al little watchmen’s museum on the first floor which is interesting for schoolclasses and other people that are interested in the story.
• Stavanger Museum, Musegata 16, Open : 10:00 am – 4:00 pm , his Museum based in an old fish warehouse dating from about 1770, The Stavanger Museum has interesting exhibits on a wide range of subjects and interests. artefacts and objects reflecting the history of Stavanger from its early days as a canning and fishing city until last century when an oil discovery resulted in Stavanger becoming known as the petroleum capital of Norway.

• Solvberget library and cultural center , Solvberggata 2 – Arneageren, Stavanger 4002, Open : 8:00 am – 9:00 pm , meeting place in the center of Stavanger. The public can visit the library, attend a wide range of events and activities for both children and adults. At Solvberget’s first floor you can also find Solvberget gallery which presents contemporary art exhibitions of high quality.
•  Stavanger Museum of Fine Arts , Henrik Ibsens gate 55, Stavanger 4021, Open : 10:00 am – 7:00 pm , a collection of distinguished Norwegian art ranging from nineteenth century to contemporary art. Of particular interest is the unique collection of paings by Lars Hertervig (1830-1902) who was born in Tysvaer by Stavanger, and whose romantic, powerful and highly personal landscapes still have as trong impact on the viewers and Hafsten Collection , 3 km from the city centre
• Broken Column by Anthony Gormley , Antony Gormley’s “Broken Column”. It consists of 23 cast iron figures placed to give the appearance of an imaginary column from Stavanger Art Museum to the city’s harbour.
• Touscene , Kvitsoeygata 25, It was originally established as Tou Brewery, a key company in Stavanger. •  Statue of Alexander Kielland , Haakon Viis Gate, Open : 12:00 am – 11:59 pm , the Statue of famous Norwegian writer Alexander Kielland ,on the central square of Stavanger, next to the main city landmark-Stavanger Domkirke. This is not surprising, as the writer and playwright Alexander Lange Hyllann 10 years, at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, was his mayor.

• Norwegian Printing Museum , Sandviga 24, Bjergstedkaien, Open : 11:00 am – 4:00 pm , The Norwegian Graphic Museum gives us a great description of the history of book printing. There are two floors and several halls, The exhibition includes printing machines, presses and other devices for publishing. History of technology, printing culture.
• Reidar Berge museet – Reidar Mountains Museum , Almenningsg 8, is in a former canned factory that we find the museum , There are several floors to walk up in this narrow building The Reidar Berge Museum counts a total of 575 registered and cataloged individual works and consists of 400 paintings, 127 pastels, 34 sculptures and 14 drawings. • Kiellandshagen , Haakon Vii’s Gate, : 12:00 am – 10:59 pm , Kiellandshagen in Stavanger is a small park located just off Breiavatnet and Kongsgard school, furthest west in the city park. The name has the garden because the poet Alexander Kielland’s house was located here.the park received a solid renovation as part of the Millennium site in Stavanger in 2007.
