Sverd i fjell ( Swords in rock ). is a memorial located in the Hafrsfjord fjord, just outside the Norwegian city of Stavanger.The monument was created by the sculptor Fritz Roed de Bryne and inaugurated by King Olaf V of Norway in 1983. The three swords are 10 meters high and are embedded in the rock of a small hill next to the fjord. They commemorate the historic Battle of Hafrsfjord that took place there in 872, when King Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under his crown.
The largest sword represents the victorious Harald, and the two smaller swords represent the defeated kings. The monument also represents peace, since the swords are embedded in solid rock, from where they can never be removed.
The inauguration of the monument was made in 1983 by the Norwegian King Olav V. The monument was financed by the Sparebanken Rogaland.A tablet built into the rock near the swords informs in Norwegian about the importance of the monument, the artist and the revelation by the king.
The monument also features as the symbol of Norway in Duolingo’s Norwegian language programme.The monument is featured in German painter Werner Buttner’s 2012 painting Kriegergroupies.
