Xunantunich is an archaeological site built by the Mayan civilization which is located in the Cayo district, in Belize.
A total of over 25 temples and palace buildings are grouped around six plazas. The most striking building, around 40 m high above the site, can be found on the southern edge of the excavation: the El Castillo pyramid. What is remarkable about El Castillo is the reconstructed stucco frieze on the east side and the new frieze replica on the west side.
Although Xunantunich is within sight of the Western Highway between San Ignacio and Benque Viejo del Carmen, it can only be reached via a ferry across the Mopan River. This runs on demand between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. You can get to the pier point from both cities either by car, taxi or bus.
At the El Castillo, the 40 meter high temple you can climb the stairs and from the top you can have a unique panoramic view and shots of the tropical rainforest ,
There is also a visitor center here that provides informations about the history of Xunantunich.
