  • The Umpherston Sinkhole was established by James Umpherston back in the 1880s, 20 years after he purchased the land. When the famous Australian farmer and politician retired, he wanted to create a place where the people of Maun Gambier could come to completely relax and escape from the sweltering summer heat.

They cleaned out all the rubbish and planted new plants. Since then, the Umpherston Garden has again become the most popular holiday destination in the city of Maun Gambier, and in 1995 Sunken was even added to the South Australian Heritage List.
