Ever dreamed of discovering a place that feels like Europe’s best-kept secret? Welcome to Zarasai – a charming city in northeastern Lithuania that’s about to become your new obsession. Imagine waking up to crystal-clear lakes, breathing in pine-scented air, and exploring a region so beautiful it’s been called “Lithuania’s Switzerland” and “Lithuania’s Finland.”

Why Zarasai Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

The Lake Life You’ve Been Craving

Zarasai is a city in North-Eastern Lithuania on a hill above seven lakes, but here’s the kicker – the Zarasai district is one of the most lake-rich in Lithuania and boasts one of the largest lakes in the country – Drūkšiai, Aviliai, Luodis and the picturesque Antalieptė lagoon and Sartai, which has the longest coastline in the country. We’re talking about over 300 lakes in the region! Whether you’re into kayaking, fishing, swimming, or just chilling lakeside with a good book, this place has got you covered.

Budget-Friendly Paradise

Forget expensive tourist traps. Expect to pay around €10-€15 per night for a bed in a shared dorm, and for food, budget about €10-€20 per day. You can live like royalty here without breaking the bank. A bus ticket within the city usually costs around €1, making it super easy to explore without spending a fortune.

When to Visit: Timing Your Perfect Zarasai Adventure

Best Times to Go

Spring Magic (May-June): In late spring, you’ll experience blooming nature and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking and exploring the beautiful lakes and forests surrounding Zarasai. The weather’s perfect for outdoor adventures, and you’ll avoid the summer crowds.

Autumn Bliss (September-October): Early autumn offers stunning fall foliage and a quieter atmosphere as the summer crowds dissipate. Temperatures during this period typically range from 8°C to 18°C (46°F to 64°F), providing a crisp yet pleasant environment for trekking.

Summer Fun (July-August): While it can get busy, temperatures reaching up to 25°C (77°F) make it perfect for water activities. Just expect more tourists and book accommodations early.

Winter Wonderland: If you’re into cozy vibes and don’t mind the cold, winter offers a completely different but magical experience.

Must-See Attractions and Experiences

Lake Zarasas: The Crown Jewel

Lake Zarasas, the largest lake in the region, where visitors can enjoy water-based activities like fishing, boating, and swimming. This isn’t just any lake – it’s your playground for epic adventures. Rent a boat, try your hand at fishing, or simply soak in those Instagram-worthy views.

Zarasai Observation Tower: Views That’ll Blow Your Mind

At a height of seventeen meters, one of the most complex architectural structures in Lithuania opens up a picturesque panorama of the lake with Great Island – one of the largest islands in Lithuania. The views here are absolutely spectacular – bring your camera because your social media followers will thank you later.

WakeInn Cable Park: Adrenaline Junkies, This One’s for You

Great place – probably the best wake park in Lithuania!👍🏻 I was surprised to find that this is so well developed recreation centre with many sports and other activities available. Whether you’re a seasoned wakeboarder or trying it for the first time, this place delivers serious thrills.

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Beautiful white church( most of the churches I saw were red). This church is located in Zarasai , hours drive from Vilnius. Its worst a look or visit inside if you are in the area. The neo-Gothic architecture is stunning, and it’s a peaceful spot for some quiet reflection.

Zarasai Regional Park: Nature Lover’s Paradise

The nearby Zarasai Regional Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering picturesque hiking trails, lush forests, and stunning panoramic views. Pack your hiking boots and get ready to explore some seriously beautiful trails.

Astravas Manor: Step Back in Time

Astravas Manor organizes various cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Lithuanian music, dance, and crafts. It’s like stepping into a time machine – perfect for history buffs and culture enthusiasts.

Hidden Gems and Local Secrets

Great Island Adventures

Great Island – one of the largest islands in Lithuania, the biggest summer event venue, the heart of the city full of stories. This island hosts some incredible festivals and events. If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of these, you’re in for a treat.

Antaliepte Reservoir: Off the Beaten Path

The surrounding forests are home to a variety of animals, making it an ideal place for hiking and exploring nature trails. This spot is perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and connect with nature.

Local Festival Scene

Attracting tens of thousands of visitors from all over Lithuania and surrounding countries, open-air music festivals delight with the performances of famous European music groups and plenty of entertainment. Plan your visit around these festivals for an unforgettable experience.

Where to Stay: From Backpacker Hostels to Lakeside Luxury

Budget-Friendly Options

Hostel Kornealita: The cheapest price for a room in Zarasai found in the last 7 days is $10/night. This rate is available with Hostel Kornealita. Perfect for backpackers and budget travelers.

Český Sodyba: Really beautiful area and a very comfortable place to stay. Despite our language barrier, the host was very friendly and helped me get settled in and even helped me dry my clothes.

Mid-Range Comfort

Apartamentai Domus Antiqua: Everything was so fresh and new, location is excellent and an interior so elegant and cosy! Located in the heart of the city with lake views.

Brut Wine Hotel: Located in Zarasai, within 18 miles of Daugavpils Ice Arena and 18 miles of Daugavpils Olympic Centre, Brut Wine Hotel provides accommodations with a restaurant and free WiFi as well as free private parking.

Unique Stays

Modern Family House by the Lake: I would highly recommend this place. It has everything what you need for short stay. It was snowing and freezing outside but it was cosy atmosphere inside. It had exceeded my expectations.

Lakeside Camping: We had a wonderful stay in Zarasai – the campground is wonderfully located next to a lake and a little removed from the town and traffic. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.

What to Eat and Where to Find It

Local Dining Scene

While Zarasai might not be a culinary capital, you’ll find plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants serving hearty Lithuanian fare. You can grab a decent meal at a local café for around €5-€10, and if you go for street food or make use of grocery stores, you can keep it even cheaper.

Shopping for Supplies

There are several supermarkets in town, including Maxima, where you can stock up on supplies for picnics by the lake or cooking in your accommodation.

Getting Around and Practical Tips

Transportation

Public transport is pretty affordable. A bus ticket within the city usually costs around €1, and if you’re planning to explore nearby areas, budget about €5-€10 for longer trips. The city is also very walkable, and many attractions are within easy walking distance of the center.

Money Matters

Expect to pay around €30 to €50 per day for a comfortable stay. ATMs are readily available, and most places accept cards, though it’s always good to have some cash on hand.

Language and Communication

While Lithuanian is the main language, many younger locals speak English, especially in tourist areas. Don’t be afraid to use translation apps – locals are generally very friendly and helpful.
