Pak Ou Caves is a Buddhist cave complex on the Mekong River, 25 km north of Luang Prabang, Laos.
Situated above the Mekong at the mouth of a major tributary of the Mekong, the U River, the cave complex consists of the “Lower Cave”, Tham Ting or Tham Leusi, and the “Upper Cave”, Tham Theung or Tham Prakachai.
The caves are famous for their collection of various Buddha statues, mostly made of wood. Over the centuries, they were brought here by local residents and pilgrims. The Lower Cave contains approximately 2,500 Buddha sculptures, and the Upper Cave contains approximately 1,500.
Today this group of caves have become well known destination attracting many tourists to visit.
