Barkhor is a neighborhood of narrow streets and a town square located around the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet.
Barkhor means “middle circuit” and describes the location of the road around the Jokhang Temple, which is located in the center of Lhasa’s old town.
The first Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo (617-650) had the Jokhang Temple built in 647. Because of its splendor, it quickly attracted thousands of Buddhist pilgrims. This is how a path was created, which laid the foundation of Barkhor Street. Many pilgrims walked and still walk clockwise through Barkhor Street. It thus developed more and more into the city’s trading center.
Barkhor was always popular as a religious center for pilgrims in Tibet and other people. Currently is One of the main tourist attractions in Lhasa in Tibet.
