The history of the Bridge of love or Bread Bridge dates back to the 14th century ,the bridge gained its name from the sellers of bread who had their stalls here. Since its construction, it has been rebuilt (e.g. in order to run a tram line there) and renovated many times. Couples come to the Love Bridge in order to attach a padlock with their initials on it and throw the key into the Radunia canal flowing below, as a symbol for their everlasting feelings towards each other.
The Bridge of love is located in a very picturesque part of the city, near the historic town hall, also it has 2 small  fountains and a view of two historical churches. Today it is the pride of Gdańsk.

Highlights :

  • The bridge gained its name from the sellers of bread who had their stalls here, however people also call it Love Bridge. It is a concept recognized by many visitors from other European cities.
  • The Bridge of Love is part of the Gdańsk & Love project, and there are more and more places for Cupid’s arrow. During the Dominican Fair, certain Gdańsk facilities will be given new meanings. And so the Gate at Piwna Street will be called the Gate of Lovers, and Zaułek Zachariasza Zappio will become the Alley of Kisses. The Bridge of Love has a chance to become not only a tourist attraction, but also an important place on the unwritten Route of Lovers.
  • Where did the tradition of hanging padlocks on bridges come from?
The beginning of this charming tradition is attributed to many sources.Perhaps, however, the beginning was the love of a pair of students from the Sanita in Costa San Giorgio school, located in Florence. To express their feelings and give them symbolism, they stole padlocks from school lockers, put their names and confessions on them, and then hung them on the Ponte Vecchio bridge at the narrowest point of the Ama River. It is one of the oldest bridges in Florence and the translation of its name is “Goldsmiths Bridge”.Currently, in most European countries there are places where love locks are hung en masse.
