Champagne Pool is a hot spring located in the Wai O Tapu geothermal region of New Zealand’s North Island.
The Champagne Pool is part of the 18 km2 Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area, which begins 20 km south of Rotorua. The pool itself is a further 7km south and is accessed via Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Park. State Highway 5 passes west near the lake.
The deep waters under Champagne Pool have a temperature of around 260°C3 but the temperature of the water in the pool is between 73°C and 75°C due to its cooling on contact with the atmosphere. The name “Champagne Pool” derives from the continuous stream of gas bubbles that rise to the surface of the water, comparable to gas bubbles in a flute of champagne.
