Ciudad Mitad del Mundo “City of the Center of the World”” is a place in the city of San Antonio, near the capital of Ecuador – Quito,a touristic area in Ecuador along the equator, home to monuments and museums, among other things. It is the most visited site in Ecuador.
The reason for the location of the monument was French surveyors under Charles Marie de La Condamine: they carried out their measurements here in 1736 and came to the conclusion that the latitude at the current location of the official equatorial monument is 00° 00′ 00″.
The monument is made of iron and concrete, and is covered with an ornately carved and polished stone called andesite. The pyramidal monument is crowned by a ball that has a diameter of 4.5 meters and weighs 5 tons. Inside the monument, there is a small museum that highlights various ethnic elements related to the culture of the Ecuadorian people.
The Ciudad Mitad del Mundo monument is located in a park with a few other smaller museums, some restaurants and several souvenir shops.
