Fort Sumter is a fort on an artificial island at the entrance of the Atlantic Ocean into the Bay of Charleston, South Carolina – U.S.A.
Its historic significance became the scene of the first military conflict of the American Civil War, which began on April 12, 1861. The building was begun in 1829 and was almost completed in 1861. It is named after Thomas Sumter (1734-1832), a general of the American Revolutionary War. After the end of military use in 1948, the Fort was declared along with the Fort Moultrie, the former lighthouse of Charleston and Liberty Square in Charleston the Fort Sumter National Monument. Since March 2019, it forms the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park. It is managed by the National Park Service.

The National Historical Park also includes a visitor center in Charleston on the mainland, as well as Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island and, since 2008, Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse / Downtown Charleston : Liberty Square’s Fort Sumter Visitors Center, 340 Concord St. Charleston, SC 29401 / There are two departure locations at Liberty Square (340 Concord St., Charleston) and Patriots Point (40 Patriots Point Rd., Mount Pleasant).Each tour lasts approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Fort Sumter is open for public tours as part of the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park operated by the National Park Service.

Fort Sumter Entrance Fee – There is no entrance fee for Fort Sumter. However, the fort is on an island that is only accessible by boat and there is a fee for the operated ferry : Ticket prices : Adults : $23 – $21 for Military/Seniors – $15 for Children (4-11 )
