The Grand Canyon of Greenland is a very large gorge located under the Greenland ice sheet.According to scientists who announced its discovery on August 30, 2013, it extends from the central part of Greenland to end at its northern end in a deep fjord in the Arctic Ocean.
The gorge has a maximum depth of 800 m, a length of 750 km, and a maximum width of 10 km. It is the longest gorge in the world. A river made the gorge 4 million years ago.
The gap was discovered in connection with NASA’s Operation IceBridge, which scanned the bedrock under the ice with a special type of radar, a so-called georadar. NASA announced their findings in a press release on August 29, 2013.
