What Makes Klevevž Special?

Imagine slipping into naturally heated water while snowflakes dance around you, or cooling off in a mineral-rich pool after hiking through medieval castle ruins. That’s exactly what awaits you at Klevevž, situated in the Lower Carniola region, right next to the village of Grič, where thermal water maintains a constant temperature of 24.8 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

This isn’t your typical spa resort – it’s nature’s own hot tub, completely free and accessible to everyone brave enough to venture here. With its 24.8 degrees, it remains one of the official thermal springs in the country, albeit just cold enough to be left to the brave ones to claim it for themselves, once the winter is here.

The Science Behind the Magic

The thermal water in Slovenia is not of volcanic origin, but instead heated by the Earth’s crust, as the temperature of rocks increases with the depth, at the rate of about 30 degrees Celsius per kilometre. This hypothermal spring called Klevevška Toplica, with a temperature of 21 to 25°C, was formed at the same fault as the spring in Šmarješke Toplice.

What makes this even more fascinating? Thermal and mineral springs in Slovenia all have temperatures above 20°C and contain at least 1000 mg of dissolved solids and/or 250 mg of naturally dissolved CO2 per liter of water. You’re literally bathing in mineral-rich, naturally carbonated water!

What You’ll Experience

The Natural Pool

The green tourist pearl of Dolenjska is known for the thermal water in the stone pool, which warms both in summer and winter with its 21 to 25 degrees Celsius. The pool itself is formed by natural stone, creating an intimate bathing experience that feels like stepping into an ancient Roman bath.

Winter Magic

In winter, you can notice the steam that is rising from the natural pool due to the temperature difference. Gentle mists above the water invite you to immerse yourself into the natural pool. Picture this: you’re surrounded by snow-covered landscape while relaxing in naturally warm water – it’s absolutely surreal!

Year-Round Swimming

You can bathe all year round, making this one of Slovenia’s most unique outdoor swimming experiences. Whether it’s a hot summer day or a chilly winter morning, the water temperature remains consistently comfortable.

Historical Treasures Surrounding the Spring

Klevevž Castle Ruins

Above the gorge are the ruins of the 13th century Klevevž castle, some preserved outbuildings and part of the former castle garden with individual ornamental trees. These medieval ruins add a mystical atmosphere to your spa experience.

The Only Cave Spa in Slovenia

The cave system of the Kleve Caves, with the only cave spas in Slovenia. The lower cave has a thermal spring and is the only thermal cave in Slovenia. This makes your visit even more special – you’re experiencing something truly unique in the country.

Historic Mill

There is also an abandoned mill near the natural spring, perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots and adding to the site’s historical charm.

Getting There: Your Navigation Guide

By Car (Most Convenient)

If you start your journey in Ljubljana, it is best to turn onto the highway, drive in the direction of Novo mesto, turn off the motorway at the Kronovo exit, and then continue towards Šmarjeta. When you arrive at the village of Grič, look out for a sign that directs you to the Klevevški grad Castle and the hot spring.

Important: You have to type in “Klevevška Toplica” in Google Maps for accurate navigation.

The Walking Path

The footpath is also suitable for baby strollers, however, it is best if you leave the pram at the mill and continue on foot carrying the baby. The walk itself is part of the adventure, taking you through a beautiful gorge carved by the Radulja stream.

What to Pack: Your Essential Checklist

Must-Bring Items

  • Swimwear (absolutely essential!)
  • Large towel for drying off
  • Warm blanket – especially crucial for winter visits
  • Warm clothes for changing back into
  • Waterproof bag for your belongings

Pro Tips

You have to change into a swimsuit with virtually no privacy since there are no bathrooms here. Pack a large towel or changing robe for modesty.

We still advise you to bring warm clothes or a blanket for when you come out of the pool – even in summer, the temperature difference can be significant.

Best Times to Visit

Winter Wonder (December – February)

This is when Klevevž truly shines! The fun that can be had at this spot, away from the eyes of all authorities, be they hotel-based or governmental is amplified in winter when you have this magical experience mostly to yourself.

Spring Awakening (March – May)

Perfect weather for hiking to the castle ruins and exploring the surrounding area after your thermal soak.

Summer Bliss (June – August)

Great for families and combining your spa visit with other outdoor activities in the region.

Autumn Colors (September – November)

The surrounding forests create a stunning backdrop, and the water feels extra welcoming as air temperatures drop.

Activities Beyond the Thermal Pool

Castle Exploration

You can visit the Klevevški grad Castle or climb the Homec Hill for additional adventure and spectacular views.

Cycling Adventures

We recommend renting electric bicycles to explore the beautiful Dolenjska countryside surrounding Klevevž.

Family-Friendly Activities

How awesome, even more ideas for a family trip! The area is perfect for children, with safe walking paths and the excitement of “wild” swimming.

Local Dining Recommendations

After your thermal soak, you’ll likely work up an appetite. The farm is only less than 1/2 hour drive away from Klevevž. We highly recommend you stop by! Enjoy some good food, hospitable service and beautiful surroundings in the company of your family.

Look for traditional Dolenjska farms offering authentic Slovenian cuisine with ingredients grown right on the property.

Health Benefits and Healing Properties

The thermal waters in Klevevž are renowned for their healing properties. Visitors often seek help for issues such as arthritis, spinal disorders, and skin conditions. The mineral-rich water provides natural therapy while you relax in one of Europe’s most pristine natural settings.

Budget-Friendly Paradise

Here’s the best part – it’s completely free! Unlike expensive spa resorts, Klevevž offers authentic thermal spring experiences without any admission fees. You only need to budget for transportation and perhaps a meal at a nearby farm.

Photography Tips

Golden Hour Magic

Visit during sunrise or sunset for ethereal photos of steam rising from the thermal pool.

Winter Shots

In winter, you can notice the steam that is rising from the natural pool due to the temperature difference – perfect for dramatic, atmospheric photography.

Historical Elements

Incorporate the castle ruins and old mill into your compositions for unique travel photos.

Safety and Considerations

What to Expect

  • No facilities (bathrooms, changing rooms, or shops)
  • No lifeguards or staff supervision
  • Natural, uneven pool bottom
  • Slippery rocks around the pool edge

Swimming Safety

The water is generally shallow but varies in depth. Always test the depth before jumping in, and be careful on wet rocks.

Environmental Respect

This pristine natural site remains beautiful because visitors respect it. Please:

  • Pack out all trash
  • Don’t use soaps or shampoos in the water
  • Respect the natural environment and wildlife
  • Keep noise levels moderate
