Namtso is a high-altitude saltwater lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.
This salt lake is located about 110 km north-northwest of downtown Lhasa, on the border between Damxung District and Baingoin District, in Nagchu Prefecture.
Often considered the highest lake in Tibet and the highest saltwater lake in the world .The lake lies at an altitude of 4,718 m on the northern slopes of the Nyainqêntanglha ridge in the southeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau.
The lake has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size, plus one or two rocky outcrops. The islands are used as a spiritual retreat by pilgrims, crossing the frozen surface of the lake in winter, and carrying their food. They then spend the summer there, having to wait for the water to rise again before being able to return to the shore ,there are Buddhist religious buildings near the lake: Tashi Doche Gompa, Gutong Gompa, Risum Gompa, Chateau Gompa.
Often referred as “Heavenly Lake, Namtso offers plenty of great photo opportunities with The vibrant turquoise colors and the gorgeous Nyainqêntanglha Mountains range as the backdrop.
