El Popoyo or Popoyo is a small coastal town in the municipality of Tola, department of Rivas, Nicaragua.
The area of Playa Sardinas, Guasacate or Popoyo was traditionally a fishing area, until the surfer movement discovered the location and tourists began to come to the area. Since then, campsites, hotels and resorts have been the main economic engine of Popoyo.
Popoyo located at the northern end of Guasacate beach, which is included in the Nicaraguan Costa Esmeralda and is one of Nicaragua’s most famous surf spots.
