Ptuj is an ancient city of Slovenia. It is located on the Drava, downstream from Maribor, in the traditional region of Styria and in the Pannonian Plain Natural Region, in Podravska District. In 69, Vespasian was proclaimed Roman emperor by the Danube legions in Ptuj, the first written mention of the city being that year. Poetovium is the base camp of the XIII Twin Legion, where its legionary fortress (kastrum) is located. The name is derived from the times of Emperor Traian, who gave him the status of a settlement and called it Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio.
The Middle Ages
In 570 the city was occupied by Avar and Slavic tribes. Ptuj became part of the Frankish empire after the end of the Avars at the end of the 8th century. Between 840 and 874 he belonged to the Principality of Blatna of Pribina and Kotzel. Between 874 and 890 Ptuj gradually came under the influence of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The city rights obtained in 1376 marked the beginning of economic growth for the city.

  • Orpheus’ monument : The Orpheus monument stands on Slovenian Square in Ptuj. The marble tombstone was erected in the 2nd century by the mayor (duumvir) of Mark Valerius Ver in the then Roman province of Upper Pannonia. It is 5 meters high and 1.8 meters wide.
  • Dominican monastery Ptuj : The Dominicans who came from Bruges in Carinthia were the first monks in Ptuj. The monastery and church were founded in 1230 by the widow of Frederick III. Ptujskog. She was assisted by Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg.
