Roswell is a city in southeastern New Mexico, United States.

The first settlers in the area came from Missouri in 1865, but were forced to leave due to the lack of water. Van Smith, a businessman from Omaha, Nebraska and his partner built the first two buildings in 1869. These two buildings house a post office, a shop and a place for guests to rest and sleep. His father’s name was Roswell Smith and he named the town after his father’s first name.
The city gained world fame in connection with the “Roswell Incident” of 1947, one of the most famous incidents, considered as the detection of unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
