Solheimasandur Beach is a black sand beach on the south coast of Iceland that’s home to the US Navy DC-3 plane wreckage. 

The plane wreck in Iceland is all that remains of a US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 which crash landed here in 1973, whilst operating a supply mission between Hofn Hornafjordur Airport and Stokksnes, Iceland. The plane crashed onto the black sandy plain of Solheimasandur, and the crew, led by the pilot Captain James Wicke, Thankfully, no one was killed or injured, although the plane was far too damaged to be repaired.This airplane wreck  is probably one of the most popular photo spots in Iceland. Every day several hundred visitors come here to inspect the crumpled envelope of the aircraft.

Access : Coordinates:63.459523,-19.364618 / The Solheimasandur Plane Wreck is located on the South Coast in Iceland, right off the Ring Road about 164 kilometers (101 miles) away from Reykjavik, / From Reykjavik,  drive towards Myrdalsjokull, where the volcano Katla is , go to the promontory Dyrholaey, and go to Solheimasandur beach where the famous aircraft wreck is.

Tips : landowners have banned access to vehicles driving on the beach. You now have to walk 4km to the plane from the road. / Vik Camping Ground is the second closest camping ground to the plane wreck.
