Tai O is a fishing village located partially on the island of the same name, west of Lantau Island , Hong Kong.
Tai O is the most famous existing fishing village in Hong Kong with houses on over-the-water stilts. Part of the village is located on Tai O Island and part on on Lantau Island.
The atmosphere of a fishing village still remains in the terraced houses along the waterway . The cross-water boats rowed by local women that were popular with tourists disappeared when the iron bridge was completed on September 26, 1996. This ship was called the “Rope Bridge” because it was a sampan that pulled ropes manually .
Local attractions include Yanghou Temple that was built during the Kangxi Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty to enshrine Yang Liangji, a high-ranking official of the Southern Song Dynasty. It is the main temple in the Tai O area, and is the first place to go to greet the gods during the Dragon Boat Festival every year.
Tai O is one of the most popular attractions in Hong Kong and is considered as “Venice of the Orient”.
