The Crooked Forest is a natural curiosity in Gryfino County located in Western Pomerania, Poland.
The “crooked forest” is now made up of 105 pines, which originally numbered around 400 all bearing a bend of 90° towards north about 10-50 cm above the ground. From this bending a curve 1 to 3 meters long originates, after which the trees begin to grow straight again, taking on a curious shape of an inverted question mark. The most widespread theory so far is that the trees were deliberately shaped this way to be used, for example, for building furniture, ships or the like. Another theory states that until the end of the 19th century the technique of coppicing was widespread in small forestry throughout Central Europe.
After all, the effect of strong magnetic fields, a natural disaster, disease and/or toxic chemicals in the soil are still common explanations today. The forest is also said to be haunted.
The place is open to the public and serves as a notable tourist attraction in the area.
