The Callanish Stones are one of Scotland’s best preserved Neolithic monuments on the west coast of Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.
Calanais is located near Breasclete on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The 13 main monoliths make up a cromlech about 13 m in diameter, with a long access avenue flanked by stones on its north side, and shorter rows of stones on its east, south and west sides. The general plan layout of the monument recalls the shape of a somewhat distorted Celtic cross. The height of each of the monoliths ranges between 1 m and 5 m, with an average of 4 m, and they are made of gneiss rock of local origin.
Local tradition claims that the giants who inhabited the island refused to convert to Christianity by Saint Kieran and were turned into stone as punishment. The Vikings avoided this place because they saw the stones as trolls .The Standing Stones are also linked to a fertility cult.
but no matter what they were made for, they are still an amazing sight and a must-see for anyone visiting the Isle of Lewis.
