Every tradition has a trail behind it

The Civilisation Trails follow the historical thread. Living Traditions follows what survived — the practices, crafts and celebrations that communities have maintained across the centuries those trails document.

What is a living tradition?

Not a museum. Not a re-enactment.

01
Still practised by communities
Every tradition in this collection is maintained by the people it belongs to — not performed for tourists, not reconstructed for heritage sites. The Csikós still herd cattle. The Almabtrieb still brings the cattle down every September.
02
Centuries of continuity
A tradition qualifies here if it has been practised across multiple generations — not a revival, not an invention. The fire of Las Fallas has been lit every March in Valencia since the 18th century. The Almabtrieb has shaped Alpine farming since the Celtic era.
03
Worth traveling for specifically
These traditions justify planning a journey around them. The Almabtrieb happens in September in specific Alpine valleys. The Csikós perform year-round on the Puszta. Timing is the difference between witnessing something extraordinary and missing it entirely.

"Not a re-enactment. Not a museum piece. The real thing — still happening." Living Traditions · The Wanders
