Nine countries. 500 GPS coordinates. Five routes from seven to sixty days.

The Balkans reward overland travel in a way that no other European region does at this price point. Nine countries in a territory smaller than France. Road quality ranging from Slovenian motorway to Albanian mountain track. Wild camping legal in six of the nine countries. Scenic roads that the rest of Europe has been discovering for years while the Balkans kept them largely to themselves.

This is the guide for that territory. Built for van campers, motorhomes and 4×4 overland vehicles. Every route carries a vehicle note specifying which vehicle types can access which roads. Every scenic road entry includes the specific restrictions that prevent a large motorhome from reaching the summit. Every wild camping entry carries the confirmed legal status so you can make decisions before you arrive.

Fourteen sections — the complete guide

Section 1 — Welcome Vehicle categories assessed honestly for the Balkans: van camper, motorhome under 7.5m, large motorhome, 4×4 with rooftop tent, motorcycle. What each can access and where each fails. Budget expectations country by country — from Slovenia (€45-65/day) to Albania (€20-35/day), the cheapest daily overland costs in Europe.

Section 2 — Trip Preparation The full vehicle preparation checklist: mechanical essentials, camping equipment, LPG considerations (fill before entering Albania — limited in the south). Documents and insurance: Green Card required for Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia — confirmed by country. Safety and wild camping security: Albania is one of the safest wild camping environments in Europe. The approach of a local to your pitch is curiosity and hospitality, not threat.

Section 3 — Nine Countries in Autumn Each country assessed for the overland traveller with road quality, wild camping status (legal/tolerated/illegal), vignette requirements, fuel prices, best territory and the overland highlight — the specific road, viewpoint or experience that makes the country worth the detour.

Slovenia — the easiest entry: excellent roads, vignette required, wild camping technically prohibited but tolerated at altitude. The Soča Valley riverside pullout.

Croatia — beautiful and expensive: wild camping strictly illegal and enforced, fines €650+, use the excellent campsite network. The Dalmatian coast road (Jadranska Magistrala) in September.

Bosnia — the most rewarding for the serious overlander: generally tolerated wild camping, no vignette, variable road quality, the most authentic daily experience in the nine-country circuit. The Neretva canyon wild camp.

Montenegro — the most dramatic: legal wild camping outside national parks, the Durmitor Ring circuit, Tara Canyon road. The wild camp above the Black Lake at 1,416m — the most extraordinary overnight position in the western Balkans.

Serbia — the most underrated: legal wild camping, cheapest fuel at €1.35/L, no vignette. The Iron Gates (Đerdap) gorge road — 100km along the Danube through the most dramatic river canyon in the Balkans.

Albania — the extraordinary: wild camping legal everywhere, no tolls, no vignette, the cheapest daily costs in the nine countries. The Albanian Riviera wild camp above Palasë — one of the ten best wild camp positions in European overlanding.

North Macedonia — the most overlooked: legal wild camping, good roads, excellent value. The Lake Ohrid shoreline drive with pullout camps every few kilometres.

Bulgaria — the best road network: legal camping in state forest land (most of the Rhodopes), vignette required, the Rhodope Mountains circuit.

Romania — the Transfăgărășan alone justifies the detour: legal wild camping outside protected areas, the Danube Delta island camps, the Transalpina at 2,145m.

Section 4 — Five Routes

7-Day Adriatic Escape (Slovenia · Croatia · Montenegro): The coastal introduction. All vehicles including large motorhomes. Easy driving throughout.

10-Day Montenegro & Albania Explorer (Montenegro · Albania · Kosovo): Van camper and 4×4 preferred for the Albanian mountain sections. The Valbona valley wild camp. The Albanian Riviera above Palasë.

14-Day Balkan Mountains Route (Romania · Bulgaria · Serbia · Bosnia): The inland overland circuit. Transfăgărășan while it’s open. Maramureș wooden churches. The Rhodope circuit. The Tara canyon road.

30-Day Grand Balkans Tour (all nine countries): The complete circuit. Week by week, country by country. The most rewarding month of overland travel available in Europe.

60-Day Ultimate Expedition (the Grand Tour plus five extensions): Peaks of the Balkans circuit, Greek Epirus, Danube Delta, Black Sea coast, Croatian islands by ferry. 15,000-18,000km total. Cost estimate: €4,500-7,000 for two people.

Section 5 — Six Scenic Roads

Durmitor Ring, Montenegro — 200km circuit from Žabljak. The Black Lake. The Tara Bridge 150m above the canyon. The Piva Canyon road carved into the cliff face. Width restriction on the Sedlo Pass section: 3.5m. Motorhomes over 2.5m: lower route via Šavnik confirmed.

SH20 Albania (Llogara Pass) — 35km descent from 1,027m to the Albanian Riviera. 20 hairpins. The most dramatically positioned coastal mountain road in the Balkans. Van campers and 4×4: no restriction. Large motorhomes (over 7m): not recommended. Road condition significantly improved since 2023 resurfacing.

Transfăgărășan, Romania — 90km, 2,042m summit, closes mid-October (confirm at drumuri.ro). The Bâlea Lake glacial summit. The Vidraru Dam. Length restriction: 7.5m. Over 7.5m: use the Transalpina instead.

Transalpina, Romania — 148km, the highest paved road in Romania at 2,145m Urdele Pass. Less famous than the Transfăgărășan, equally extraordinary. No formal length restriction but tight sections above the summit — large motorhomes should verify conditions locally. Wild camp at the summit: the most extraordinary stargazing in Romania.

Rhodope Mountains Circuit, Bulgaria — 250km from Plovdiv. Bachkovo Monastery. The Trigrad Gorge and Devil’s Throat cave. Shiroka Laka village. The most underdriven scenic circuit in the Balkans. All vehicles, all seasons.

Tara Canyon Road, Serbia — 80km. Banjska Stena viewpoint: the canyon 1,300m below. The Tara beech forest in October. No vehicle restrictions. Legal wild camp at the forest edge: GPS confirmed.

Section 6 — Wild Camping

The wild camping legal guide is the most practically valuable section in the catalogue. Every country assessed: Albania and Serbia are legal everywhere outside protected areas. Bosnia is generally tolerated. Montenegro is legal outside national parks. Bulgaria is legal in state forest land. Romania is legal outside protected areas. Croatia is strictly illegal with fines up to €650. Slovenia is effectively prohibited for vehicles.

80 confirmed wild camp locations with GPS, altitude, surface condition, water source and confirmed legal status. Mountain camps, lakeside, forest and coastal locations. The Albanian Riviera cliff above Palasë, the Durmitor Black Lake approach at 1,480m, the Transalpina summit at 2,100m, the Lake Ohrid shoreline, the Rhodope forest at 1,420m.

Sections 7-14 cover: 15 assessed campsites (scenic, eco, farm stay, remote), 100 hidden villages and extraordinary places, day hikes near camp locations, national parks assessed for campervan access, lakes and swimming spots, fuel costs and toll guide for all nine countries, the complete border crossing vehicle documentation guide, photography guide with sunrise and sunset locations, drone regulations for all nine countries, and the 500-coordinate GPS Atlas across five categories.
