Serbia ★★★★★ — The most underrated. The Belgrade-Bar railway (476km, 200 tunnels, the Mala Rijeka Viaduct 200m above the valley). The Fruška Gora monastery circuit in October mist. Vrnjačka Banja thermal season.

Romania ★★★★★ — The Carpathians in October. Transylvania bear watching before hibernation. The Transfăgărășan (usually closes mid-October). Maramureș All Saints Day: candlelit cemeteries across the entire region on 1 November.

Bulgaria ★★★★★ — The Rila Monastery in its autumn forest. The Seven Rila Lakes before the gondola closes. The Rhodope plateau and Trigrad Gorge in October colour. Plovdiv old town in September warmth.

Albania ★★★★★ — The Albanian Riviera in September: the most commercially underpriced experience in European travel. The Valbona-Theth traverse: the most extraordinary two-day alpine walk in the Balkans. Berat and Gjirokastër in November with no international visitors.

North Macedonia ★★★★★ — Lake Ohrid in September: the most extraordinary lake in the Balkans, water clarity comparable to Baikal. Sveti Jovan Kaneo church above the lake at dawn. The Šar Mountains plateau in October.
