Byodo-In is a a non-practicing Buddhist temple located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not a functional Buddhist temple in the true sense as it does not host a resident monastic community or active congregation. Inside the temple is a 5.5 meter statue of Buddha, a wooden image representing Amitābha. It is notably covered with gold. Outside is a three-ton brass bell. Around the temple are large ponds with koi. Surrounding these ponds are lush Japanese gardens set against a backdrop of the towering cliffs of the Koʻolau Range.
The temple is a smaller replica of the 900-year-old Byōdō-in Buddhist temple located in Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
