Hikkaduwa is a small coastal town and popular resort on the west coast of Sri Lanka.
Until the 1970s, Hikkaduwa was a “dreamy” fishing village. It was then discovered by young individual tourists who enjoyed the beauty of beach life there as hippies or surfers. Numerous simple pensions, restaurants and pubs emerged. In the 1980s the first larger hotels were built and package tourism developed.
Hikkaduwa today is one of the most popular and developing resorts in Sri Lanka. People come here, first of all, for a beach holiday and a well-developed resort infrastructure.
