Tolmin is a city in the western part of Slovenia. Located in the Gorishka region , in the Upper valley of the Soča River, near the Slovenian border with Austria and Italy.
Tolmin stands on the southern rim of the Julian Alps. it is the administrative, cultural and economic center of the valley. In October-December 1917, one of the largest battles of the First World War took place near Talmin – the Battle of Caparet.
Today Tolmin has an old town, a modern library, an athletic stadium and quality sports fields. The Tolmin Museum takes care of the museum collections.
In 2016, Tolmin became the Alpine City of the Year. He took the title from Chamonix, the French Olympic center below Mont Blanc.

There is a direct bus to Tolmin from Ljubljana (2h 40min) and Bovec (1h) at least a couple of times a day / By train: Most na Soč train station (7 km from the center of Tolmin). There is a local bus to Tolmin next to the train station. / By car : From the city of Ljubljana via Idrija town is 104 km.

- Dante cave (Zadlaška jama): This karst cave is famous for its stalactites and stalagmites of unusual shapes and colors. Dante’s Cave has been explored to a depth of 1500 meters. The entrance to the cave is located above the confluence of the Tolminki and Zadlashchiki rivers.
- Mengore Hill, outdoor museum of the first world war : An open-air tour of the museum takes you through the tranquil forests of Mengora Hill, home to numerous well-preserved elements of the Austro-Hungarian defense line.
- Tulip tree : The magnificent tulip tree reaches 455 cm in circumference, it is the only representative of this species in the huge park at the Coronini mansion.
- Kozlov rob : Kozlov Hill is a rounded peak that rises above the city, which locals often call the Castle.The hilltop castle was first mentioned in the 12th century.
- The City Museum of Tolmin is located in the Coronini mansion in the very center of Tolmin, the museum exposition presents the cultural heritage of the Soča region.
- Tolmin Gorges : The Tolminka River Ramp (180 m) is the lowest point of the Triglav National Park, it is the longest river bed in Slovenia and one of the deepest. The place in the gorge, where two rivers, Tolminka and Zadlashchik, join the gorge.The Tolmin Gorge is the lowest and southernmost entry point into the Triglav National Park and the most important natural landmark of the Tolmin Municipality.
- Tolmin German ossuary : In 1938, a Munich firm completed the construction of the ossuary, where 965 German soldiers found their last refuge. The stones used in the construction of the ossuary were brought from Germany.
- Tolmin is the cemetery church of St. Urha. There was an Old Slavic necropolis in the area of the cemetery. / Tolmin and Most na Soči are one of the most important Iron Age sites in Europe, connected by an accumulation lake.
- The memorial church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca : The church is dedicated to the fallen Austro-Hungarian defenders of the Isonzo Front battlefield (1915–1917). As the most beautiful monument of the First World War in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, in 1999 it was declared a cultural monument of national importance, in 2007 it was included in the list of particularly important historical and cultural heritage of Europe and in 2018 received the European Heritage Label.
