The SS Ayrfield was a transport ship launched in 1911 in England with the name of SS Corrimal. Its mission was to transport coal, which was still the blood of the Industrial Revolution that moved the muscle of the British Empire. Decades later, the coal man went on to perform military transport functions in the Pacific area during World War II, at the service of the US army. the rusty helmet of the SS Ayrfield and its green crown became a very familiar image for the residents of Sydney…It was they who baptized him with the name of “the floating forest”
