Husavik is the largest town and administrative center of the Icelandic community Norðurþing  and has 2196 inhabitants. The first Viking, who proved to be in Iceland for a long time – the Swede Garðar Svavarson – spent the winter in Husavik. He named Iceland first of all, Garðarsholmur. A monument at the Husavik School commemorates him.

The former municipality Husavik (Isl Húsavíkurbær, municipality number 6100, area size 269 km ²) was merged in June 2006 with the rural communities Keldunes (Kelduneshreppur), Öxarfjörður  and Raufarhofn (Raufarhafnarhreppur) to the new municipality Norðurþing. In 2002, the rural community Reykjahreppur was incorporated into Húsavíkurbær.
Husavik is one of the largest cities in the north, which means that it is still a small village. It is characterized by fishing and fish processing as well as by tourism.
