  • Why Ourense Should Be on Every Traveler’s List

Think soaking in hot springs is just for Iceland or Japan? Think again! Tucked away in northwestern Spain lies Ourense, the thermal capital of Galicia, where over 3 million liters of mineral-rich water flow daily from natural springs. The Minho Thermal Walk offers an incredible journey along the river where you can hop from pool to pool, each with its own character and temperature.

What Makes the Minho Thermal Walk So Special?

The walk runs along the right bank of the Minho River, starting just meters from the Millennium Bridge and stretching 4 kilometers through lush vegetation. What sets this apart from other thermal destinations is the variety – you’ll find everything from free municipal pools to Japanese-inspired spa complexes, all set against the backdrop of Galicia’s stunning natural landscape.

This large thermal park extends along the banks of river Minho as it passes through Ourense. As a whole, the river banks are the city’s great green artery: several kilometres of lush vegetation through which to walk, run or cycle while admiring nature and the landscape.

The Complete Thermal Pool Guide

A Chavasqueira – Your First Stop

Distance from city center: 2 km (30-minute walk) Temperature: 40-41°C Cost: Free outdoor pools, paid spa facilities

This is where your thermal adventure begins! A Chavasqueira is also known as the “Bishop’s Hot Springs” because it was Cardinal Quevedo who pushed for the pools to be created so that sick people who visited the old spa could be treated. The free stone pools sit right next to a private Japanese-inspired thermal resort with more amenities.

What you’ll find:

  • Free outdoor stone pools
  • Changing rooms and lockers
  • Sunbathing areas
  • Adjacent paid spa with saunas and treatments

O Tinteiro Spring – The Scenic Stop

Distance from A Chavasqueira: 500 meters Temperature: 43°C Cost: Free

This therapeutic spring sits on a platform over the river, perfect for bird watching while you soak. The source is located on a viewing platform over the river, and is a good place from which to observe the birds that have turned the river into their home. The waters here are particularly renowned for skin care properties.

Muíño da Veiga – The Mill Pool Paradise

Distance from city center: 4 km Temperature: 65-72°C (some of the hottest in Europe!) Cost: Free Hours: 10 AM – 8 PM

These thermal baths are next to an old wooden water mill that has been fully restored. The baths are named after it – muíño means mill in Galician – and it also adds character to the area, setting the baths in an exceptionally beautiful landscape.

Features:

  • Four pools of varying temperatures
  • Restored historic mill setting
  • Changing rooms with lockers
  • Car parking available
  • Perfect sunset viewing spot

Outariz and Burga de Canedo – The Grand Finale

Distance from city center: 6 km Temperature: 60-61°C Cost: Free municipal pools; private spa €6.40

Just before the footbridge that crosses to the other shore you’ll find the pools of Outariz and Burga de Canedo, the largest area of thermal activity in Ourense, which is also free. This is the crown jewel of the thermal walk, featuring the largest thermal complex in Ourense.

What makes it special:

  • 11 outdoor and 3 indoor pools (private spa)
  • Japanese “Zen” circuit and Celtic-inspired “Celta” circuit
  • Free pools with changing rooms and facilities
  • Walkway access from parking on opposite bank

Essential Planning Information

What to Bring

  • Swimwear (mandatory)
  • Towels (required for entry)
  • Flip-flops (essential for walking between pools)
  • Water bottle (stay hydrated!)
  • Sunscreen (Spanish sun is strong year-round)

Age Restrictions

Children under 10 years old are not permitted due to the temperature of the thermal waters. This is strictly enforced for safety reasons.

Best Times to Visit

  • Year-round destination – the pools are open 365 days a year
  • Winter magic: Many say winter visits are unbeatable when you’re soaking in 60°C water while rain falls around you
  • Summer evenings: Perfect for watching sunsets from Muíño da Veiga
  • Early morning: Fewer crowds, more peaceful experience

Getting There and Around

The Thermal Train Experience

The most fun way to explore is via the Thermal Train! Trains depart from the Plaza Mayor in the heart of Ourense, next to the legendary As Burgas springs, and stop at all the hot water pools along the right bank of the Minho River. It’s the only vehicle allowed to cross the historic Roman Bridge.

Public Transport Options

  • Line 26: Direct to A Chavasqueira
  • Line 5 or 19: To Outariz/Reza area (cross the pedestrian bridge)
  • Walking: The entire route is pedestrian-friendly

Parking

Multiple authorized parking areas are available, but remember the thermal promenade itself is pedestrian-only. The Thermal Promenade is a pedestrian zone. Remember that to get there by car you must go to the authorized parking lots, and from there take a short walk on foot to the hot springs.

Health Benefits and Water Properties

The thermal waters of Ourense aren’t just relaxing – they’re genuinely therapeutic. Ourense’s thermal waters are soft-mineralized, with high amounts of bicarbonate, sodium, fluoride, lithium and sulphur. They acquire their mineral properties through their journey to the surface, as they emerge from deposits of porous granite located up to 1 km underground.

Therapeutic benefits:

  • Arthritis and rheumatism relief
  • Skin condition treatment
  • Muscle tension release
  • Stress reduction
  • Circulation improvement

Beyond the Thermal Walk

Historic As Burgas

Don’t miss the original thermal springs in the city center! The most famous fountains in Ourense are those of As Burgas. Situated in the heart of the old town, they are well worth a visit to see the water at temperatures of over 60º coming out from them. Legend says whoever touches the water will end up marrying in the city!

Exploring Ourense

  • Roman Bridge: Walk across this medieval marvel built on Roman foundations
  • Cathedral: Visit the stunning Pórtico del Paraíso with original polychromy
  • Historic Quarter: Wander through slopes streets and discover hidden chapels
  • Tapas Scene: Enjoy free tapas with every drink order

Practical Tips for First-Time Visitors

Hydration is Key

The high temperatures can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your thermal experience.

Start Slow

Begin with cooler pools and gradually work your way up to the hotter ones. Your body needs time to adjust.

Pool Etiquette

  • Shower before entering (facilities provided)
  • Respect quiet zones, especially in Japanese-inspired areas
  • Don’t stay in the hottest pools for more than 15-20 minutes at a time

Budget Considerations

  • Free options: Municipal pools at each location
  • Paid experiences: €5-6 for premium spa facilities
  • Food: Café facilities available at some locations
  • Transport: Thermal train or local buses (very affordable)

Seasonal Considerations

Winter Wonderland (December-February)

The most magical time to visit! Imagine soaking in 65°C water while surrounded by cool mountain air. The contrast is incredible, and you’ll often have pools nearly to yourself.

Spring Awakening (March-May)

Perfect weather for combining thermal soaks with hiking. The riverside vegetation is lush and green.

Summer Escape (June-August)

Busiest season but fantastic for sunset soaking. Book spa treatments in advance.

Autumn Bliss (September-November)

Ideal temperatures for walking between pools, beautiful fall colors along the river.

Accessibility Information

Most thermal areas are accessible to visitors with mobility challenges, though some pools require steps to enter. The Thermal Train and main walkways are wheelchair accessible. Contact individual facilities ahead of time to confirm specific accessibility features.

Why Ourense Should Be on Every Traveler’s List

Just as in Roman and medieval times there were pilgrimages to geographical points with hot springs with healing properties, the city hopes that in this 21st century and in a society with a much more active and stressful pace of life and work, Ourense becomes the city-spa of Spain.

In a world of crowded tourist destinations, the Minho Thermal Walk offers something genuinely unique – a chance to experience one of Europe’s most extensive thermal areas in a completely natural setting. Whether you’re seeking therapeutic benefits, unique Instagram shots, or simply an unforgettable relaxation experience, this hidden gem in Galicia delivers.

The combination of free access, stunning natural beauty, therapeutic benefits, and cultural richness makes this one of Spain’s best-kept secrets. With over 2,000 years of thermal tradition and modern facilities that respect the natural environment, the Minho Thermal Walk represents the perfect fusion of history, wellness, and natural beauty.

Pack your swimsuit, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare to discover why Romans, medieval pilgrims, and modern travelers have all fallen in love with Ourense’s magical thermal waters. Your body, mind, and Instagram feed will thank you!
