- Because of this idyllic location, it was chosen as the main filming location for the film Local Hero.Pennan represents the fictional town of Ferness in the film. What became particularly famous were the scenes in which the film’s protagonist MacIntyre – played by Peter Riegert – repeatedly called his superior Felix Happer – played by Burt Lancaster – from a red telephone box standing directly on the harbor wall – calls his native Texas. The phone booth used in the film was a dummy. However, due to the large number of visitors who were looking for exactly this telephone booth in the town, a functioning telephone booth was installed in 1989 a few meters next to where the dummy was installed. It is jokingly referred to as Scotland’s most famous telephone box.
