The Blue Pond (Aoiike) is a small artificial water basin located near Shirogane Onsen, a spa resThe Blue Pondort in the municipality of Biei, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido island , Japan.

The lake was created in 1988, following the eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1984 , as part of a system of work aimed at controlling erosion and preventing the flow of lahars from reaching the town of Biei to do this the Biei river basin has been modified. The reasons to turn blue Because  The nearby spring water contains mainly white particles such as aluminum hydroxide

The “Blue Pond,” which changes in color depending on the season, time, and weather became a  favorite  tourist spot.

The pond has become a tourist attraction only recently  part of the fame is due to the fact that, in 2012, a photo of the Blue Pond was included among the fifteen screensavers of the Apple OS X Mountain Lion operating system .
Blue Asahi was introduced on TV Asahi’s “Miracle Earth Story” on May 25, 2014, a professional photographer published a photo book “blueriver” in 1998 ,  the blue pond was included in this photo collection spread the word through word of mouth by photography enthusiasts.

Access : Coordinates: 43.493583, 142.614028 / By bus :  bus tour from Sapporo. There are numerous tour agencies and bus companies that run tours to the Blue Pond from Sapporo / Get on the Hokkaido Expressway at the Sapporo interchange (IC) and get off at Mikasa IC, then go pass Katsurazawa Dam and through Furano -150km.
From Sapporo IC, get off at Asahikawa Takasu IC, and drive south towards Biei -180km- / It is possible to take a bus or taxi from Biei Station.The pond is 500m from the parking lot, which means a walking time of 5 minutes.

Hours :  Always open , Closed : No closing days ,Admissions : None-Free entry

Activities : photo opportunities- photography trips / sightseeing / walking / stroll through  forest / snapping selfies
