Lake Meke is a volcanic crater lake located in the Konya province in southwest Central Anatolia, Turkey.
The crater lake was formed by the flooding of the crater of an extinct volcano, which was formed about 4 million years ago when the volcano erupted. After the first eruption, the second eruption formed another volcanic cone with a maar inside the lake.
In a bird’s eye view of the lake, it appears as a black dot surrounded by blue water. This image caused the lake to be described as the “Evil Eye Bead of the World”. However, since the underground waters of the Konya Plain have receded and there is not much water left around the lake, it has lost its former appearance. It is reported in the press that the lake dries up almost every year. During the summer months when the lake water decreases. It is one of the rare natural wonders where migratory birds take a break over Turkey.
