Jal Mahal is a famous historical palace located in the middle of Mansagar Lake in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, India.
The palace and surrounding lake were built in the 18th century by Maharaja Savaj Jai Singh.The palace actually has five floors, the lower few of which are flooded. Its initial use was most likely as a Maharaja’s resort; the location was chosen as a suitable place for bird hunting, but also spectacular performances, celebrations and social events took place here. It was not used for long-term living and therefore there are no spaces for these purposes.
The palace is currently partially flooded by a lake, two floors rise above its surface. The structure, which was built of red sandstone, has a square plan. The interior of the palace is richly decorated with marble elements. There are four towers (chatri) in the corners of the palace.
It is one of the symbols of the city and an example of Rajput architecture with influences of Mughal architecture. It is a protected monument (registered in the list of cultural monuments of the state of Rajasthan under.
