Due to its strategically important location, there were fortifications on the hill as early as the mid-17th century, the city’s iconic Cabot Tower was built by 1900, on Signal Hill you can see the remains of Fort St. John with mounted cannons.
Today the hill is part of the Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada, a memorial site managed by Parks Canada, and one of the attractions of St. John’s with a visitor center and hiking trails. The hill containing Cabot Tower was declared a National Historic Site of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador on May 30, 1951
