Cathedral Cove is a cove on the beachfront section of Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand’s North Island.
Despite being classified as a marine protected area, ( Te Whanganui-A-Hei -Cathedral Cove- Marine Reserve ) the cave and some of the bays in the area are easily accessible via paths. From the car park near Hahei and Gemstone Bay it takes around 45 minutes to walk and descend the stairs to the beach at Mare’s Leg Cove.
From Hahei Beach you can also take a small boat to Cathedral Cove. Very beautiful beaches in the bays invite you to swim. However, signs in front of the caves warn against entering because of the possibility of rocks falling. A few kilometers south of Hahei is the Hot Water Beach, which is also very interesting for tourists.
This site was used by Disney teams to shoot the film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Cathedral Cove is one of the “must visit” places on the Coromandel Peninsula.
