The Grand Canal ( Canal Grande or Canal Grando ) is a canal in Venice, Italy.
The Grand Canal is almost 4 km long , It slides from the northwest tip of Venice, where the access to the mainland is, to the San Marco basin, in the Adriatic Sea.
More than 170 beautiful buildings line the banks of the Grand Canal. Most of these date from the 13th/18th century and show the prosperity and art created by the Republic of Venice.
There are currently four bridges spanning the canal, the oldest of which is the Rialto Bridge. Until the construction of the Scalzi Bridge and the Accademia Bridge in the 19th century , the Rialto Bridge was the only permanent connection across the canal.
In addition to the bridges and the urban vaporetti, gondolas (Italian traghetti) allow you to cross the Grand Canal at eight points. The gondolas only operate during the day.
The canal forms the main water supply system in the city. A large number of taxi speedboats pass by this canal and transport tourists during a walk in the city.
