TL;DR: Discover Bosnia’s most enchanting secret – a cluster of 20 fairy-tale watermills located between pristine lakes just 6km from Jajce. Free admission, stunning photography opportunities, and a peaceful escape that feels like stepping into a storybook village. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone seeking Bosnia’s hidden natural gems.

What Makes Mlinčići So Special?

Picture this: 20 little wooden huts sitting on skinny stilts right over gushing water, looking like a little storybook village. That’s exactly what awaits at Mlinčići (pronounced “mlin-chee-chee”), one of Bosnia’s most photogenic yet surprisingly under-visited attractions.

These mills are situated on travertine barriers, arranged in two rows, showcasing high ethnographic value. What makes them truly unique is their ingenious design – since the flow here is spread out, by using a series of little mills instead of one big water wheel, the diffuse water power could be aggregated. Pretty ingenious.

The Story Behind the Mills

Some of those mills are built 300 years ago for local wheat grinding purposes, and they were an essential part of the local economy during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Built solely for function and necessity, these mills exhibit simplicity in design, devoid of decorations, windows, or ceilings.

The mills weren’t always tourist attractions. Sadly, the mills were damaged in the ’90s and reconstructed after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina finished, but due to lack of care, caused them to slowly deteriorate. In 2005, some were again brought back to function, and today, only six are known to be in function.

What to Expect at the Site

The Mills Themselves

Each mill stands on wooden pillars of varying heights due to the uneven terrain, covered by multi-pitched roofs with shingles. Accessible via wooden planks, these mills are equipped with necessary machinery like grinders and mill wheels.

Despite damage during the Bosnian War, the complex has been fully restored, with one mill currently operational due to maintenance challenges. The addition of connecting pathways completed in 1985, facilitating continuous exploration.
