Why Fanø Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

Let’s be real – most people think of Copenhagen when they picture Denmark. But here’s the thing: Fanø lies within the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park, Denmark’s largest national park, and it’s absolutely nothing like the city. Picture this: 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) long and 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) wide of pure natural beauty, where Sønderho won the award as Denmark’s most beautiful village.

The island feels like stepping into a fairytale – one where you can drive your car on the beach, spot harbor seals lounging on sandbanks, and wander through villages that haven’t changed much since the 1800s. Plus, with a total population of 3,426, you’ll actually feel like you’ve escaped the crowds.

Getting to Fanø: Your Gateway to Paradise

Here’s the good news: getting to Fanø is ridiculously easy. The company FANØLINJEN sails from Esbjerg to Fanø (and vice versa) every day of the year, and the journey takes just 12 minutes.

Ferry Costs and Schedule:

  • It costs 35 DKK to travel with the ferry for the majority of the year, but the price rises to 45 DKK in July and August
  • You only have to pay for a ticket from Esbjerg to Fanø. It is free to take the ferry in the other direction
  • The ferry leaves every 15 to 30 minutes, which means you have plenty of flexibility when planning your trip

Pro tip: If you’re flying internationally, land in Copenhagen first, then take a train or bus to Esbjerg. The whole journey from Copenhagen to Fanø takes about 3-4 hours – totally doable for a day trip, but trust me, you’ll want to stay longer.

The Must-See Towns: Where Magic Happens

Nordby: Your Fanø Home Base

Nordby is the first thing you experience on Fanø, as the ferry from Esbjerg sails directly here. This charming harbor town is where most visitors start their Fanø adventure, and honestly, it sets the bar pretty high.

What to do in Nordby:

  • Stroll down the harbor promenade and watch the boats bobbing in the marina
  • Explore streets lined with houses have not changed much since they were built in the 19th century
  • Visit the maritime museums to learn about Fanø’s incredible seafaring history
  • Nordby is the center of many cultural activities on Fanø

Sønderho: Denmark’s Most Beautiful Village

If Instagram had existed in the 1800s, Sønderho would’ve broken the internet. Sønderho, the winner of the prettiest village in Denmark award, is pure eye candy.

Why Sønderho is unmissable:

  • Most of the buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. They have been well-preserved and are still in use
  • many of the houses here are listed, as they want to maintain the atmosphere the old buildings give to the town
  • The village has a rich folk music heritage and hosts traditional festivals
  • Many Danish artists have decided to live there part-time

Walking through Sønderho feels like time travel – in the best possible way. The narrow cobblestone streets, thatched-roof houses, and maritime atmosphere create an incredibly romantic setting.

Fanø’s Epic Beaches: 15km of Pure Bliss

Let’s talk about the real star of the show: Fanø’s beaches. We’re talking about 15 km of unbroken sandy beach that’ll make you question why you ever bothered with crowded tourist beaches elsewhere.

Beach Activities That’ll Blow Your Mind

Swimming and Water Sports:

  • The best place for swimming is the part from Fanø Bad to Rindby Strand
  • At Fanø Bad there are two beach volleyball courts, a beach tennis court and a beach soccer field, all of which are free to use
  • The large beach on Fanø is suitable for many types of beach sports. Kite flying, beach sailing and surfing are all popular activities

Beach Sports Paradise:

  • Fanø is world famous as a hotspot for kite flying and other beach sports activities
  • A 3 km stretch of the beach is reserved for blokart, kitebuggy, surf and other beach activities
  • Try your hand at beach volleyball, soccer, or tennis (all free!)

The Coolest Beach Feature: You can actually drive your own car on the beach all the way from Sønderho to Fanø Vesterhavsbad. How crazy is that?

Amber Hunting: Find Your Own Treasure

Here’s something that’ll get your inner treasure hunter excited: The sea washes up many exciting things on the beach at Fanø. Between seaweed and shells you find the sea’s gold – amber. After storms, the beaches are literally littered with these golden gems. It’s like nature’s own treasure hunt!

Wildlife Encounters You’ll Never Forget

Seal Watching: Nature’s Entertainment

One of Fanø’s biggest draws is its incredible seal population. You may get lucky if the tide is out and spot seals as you wander along the coast.

Best seal-watching spots:

  • Experience both the spotted seal and the more rare and large gray seal on the large sandbar west of Sønderho
  • At low tide, you can walk 1.5 km out to sea to the seal bank
  • There are guided excursions throughout the season

Pro tip: Time your visit with low tide for the best seal-spotting opportunities. The guided mudflat walks are absolutely worth it – you’ll learn tons about the ecosystem while getting up close with these adorable marine mammals.

Bird Watching Paradise

Each of the the Wadden Sea’s different habitats for animals and plants has its own very special importance for breeding and migrating birds. If you’re into bird watching, Fanø is basically heaven. The Wadden Sea is a major flyway for millions of migratory birds.

Adventure Activities for Thrill-Seekers

The Big Five Hiking Route

Forget Africa’s Big Five – Fanø has its own version! The Big Five is a fantastic hike and offers beautiful views and scenery all the way. You’ll hit five major dune peaks: Kikkebjerg, Pælebjerg, Klingebjerg, Annedalsbjerg and Mosedalsbjerg.

Fanø Klitplantage: Nature Playground

Fanø Klitplantage, also known as Fanø Dune Plantation, is a forested area in the centre of the island covering 1,421 hectares. This isn’t your average forest – it’s got dunes, small lakes, meadows and marshes plus three marked hiking trails through the plantation and the chance to spot fallow or red deer and rabbits.

Family bonus: The forest playground on Fanø is located in the scenic Fanø Dune Plantation between Rindby and Sønderho. There are activities for both children and adults, including an obstacle course, sensory play area and thematic areas such as Sherwood Forest and Fairy Forest.

Denmark’s Oldest Golf Course

Golf lovers, listen up: The golf course is Denmark’s oldest and only real links course. There are no other courses in Denmark like it. Fanø Golf Links is located in the Wadden Sea National Park in a magnificent natural area among green dunes, heather and mare straw.

Art lovers and Instagram enthusiasts, you’re in for a treat! The artist Thomas Dambo has designed a wealth of fantastic trolls which are located in many different places in the Danish landscape, and Anker Drømmefanger is one of them. This massive wooden sculpture is a must-see photo op.

World War II History

History buffs will be fascinated by Fanø’s wartime legacy. Fanø was central to the Atlantic Wall during World War II due to its strategic location at the entrance to Esbjerg Harbour. The island was heavily fortified with over 300 bunkers, five large gun emplacements and many other defensive installations. The remains of the 300 bunkers built by the Nazis can still be spotted along the coast line.

Mobile Beach Sauna
