Sete Cidades ★★★★★ — The most extraordinary landscape on São Miguel. Lagoa Verde appears green due to suspended algae and its shallower depth, affecting how light is absorbed and reflected. The blue lake is coloured by depth and sky reflection. Both effects are completely real. The guide specifies the two viewpoints (Boca do Inferno and Vista do Rei), the precise timing window before tour buses arrive (before 09:00 or after 16:00 in July-August), and the one thing 95% of visitors miss — descending to lake level in the village for the view no elevated photograph shows. Lagoa do Fogo ★★★★★ — The least visited of the three calderas and the most rewarding on a clear day. The Lake of Fire is misnamed — the crater is green, forested and extraordinarily peaceful.
