Picture this: an island where the days can be lived barefoot (its sandy roads, unpaved, and the absence of cars invite to such) and, above all, without haste, with the swimsuit always on and the bike ready to pedal. Welcome to La Graciosa, the eighth and smallest inhabited Canary Island that’s about to become your new favorite hideaway. This car-free paradise spans just 29 km2 (11+1⁄4 sq mi) but packs more natural beauty and tranquility than islands ten times its size.

La Graciosa isn’t your typical tourist trap – it’s a protected natural sanctuary where motor vehicles are strictly limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes. Think of it as nature’s way of hitting the reset button on your busy life, where your biggest decision is which pristine beach to explore next.

Wildlife: A Living Natural Laboratory

La Graciosa is part of the largest marine reserve in Europe, making it a biodiversity hotspot that’ll blow your mind. The waters surrounding this volcanic gem host an incredible 304 species of seaweed, representing 53.15% of the total flora of the Canary Archipelago – basically, it’s an underwater garden party!

Marine Life That’ll Make You Gasp

The island’s crystal-clear waters are home to some seriously impressive creatures. You’ll find loggerhead turtles, angel sharks, and monk seals calling these waters home. The lucky ones might spot bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and occasionally orcas and sperm whales during boat excursions. Diving enthusiasts, prepare to be amazed by octopuses, barracuda, and various species of sharks and rays.

Feathered Friends Above

Bird watchers, you’re in for a treat! La Graciosa is a Special Conservation Area for Birds (ZEPA) with the largest population of Scopoli’s shearwater (between 7,500 – 10,000 pairs), considered the largest colony in Spanish territory. Keep your eyes peeled for kestrels, barn owls, Eleonora’s falcon and the guincho or osprey.

Land Creatures

While terrestrial wildlife is more limited, the island hosts some unique species including the Lizard of Haría, an endemic species found only here, plus various rabbit populations that play important roles in the ecosystem.

Attractions: Nature’s Greatest Hits

Beaches That’ll Ruin All Other Beaches for You

  • Playa de La Francesa: A stunning crescent-shaped beach perfect for snorkeling with calm, turquoise waters
  • Playa de La Cocina: Located at the foot of Montaña Amarilla (“yellow mountain”), this sheltered beach with calm waters and white sand is great for families, as well as snorkeling and diving
  • Playa de Las Conchas: Known for being windier but absolutely spectacular for dramatic photos
  • Playa del Salado: One of the most accessible beaches, only 15 minutes walk from Caleta de Sebo and home to the island’s campsite

Volcanic Wonders

  • Montaña Amarilla (Yellow Mountain): The island’s iconic volcanic cone offering breathtaking panoramic views
  • Montaña Bermeja: Another volcanic marvel that provides incredible sunset vistas
  • Arco de los Caletones: A spectacular natural volcanic arch at Lambra beach

The Two Towns

  • Caleta de Sebo: The main settlement where most of the island’s inhabitants live and where you can find its accommodation and tourist services
  • Pedro Barba: A smaller, quieter settlement of around twenty houses, perfect for ultimate seclusion

Accommodation & Campervan Options

Traditional Stays

Most accommodations cluster in Caleta de Sebo, ranging from family-run apartments to boutique guesthouses. Popular options include Apartamentos El Sombrerito, a family business since 1990 offering 7 apartments equipped with bedrooms, full kitchens, private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and television, just a few meters from the sea.

Camping Adventures

Here’s the thing about camping – it’s possible but with rules! There is one official campsite where all campers stay, located at El Salado beach, close to the island’s port. However, to stay there, you have to request a permit, as the whole island of La Graciosa is a protected area. The number of permitted tents is restricted, so make sure that you book well in advance.

Important note: Campervans and motor vehicles are not allowed on the island. So while you can camp, you’ll need to bring your gear on foot or by bicycle from the ferry port.

Campervan Reality Check

Sorry, campervan enthusiasts – La Graciosa maintains its pristine environment by prohibiting motor vehicles. But here’s the silver lining: both ferry companies, Líneas Romero and Biosfera Express, have free private parking next to the Órzola pier from where the ferries depart, so you can safely leave your wheels on Lanzarote while exploring the island.

Summer Activities: Sun, Sand, and Serenity

Summer on La Graciosa is pure magic. With temperatures averaging 25 °C (77°F) in summer, it’s beach weather every day!

  • Beach hopping: With different beaches offering various vibes, you can spend days discovering hidden coves
  • Snorkeling and diving: The marine reserve offers some of Europe’s best underwater experiences
  • Cycling tours: Explore the island’s four main hiking trails by bike – the flat terrain makes it accessible for everyone
  • Boat excursions: Trips can be made by sea to the Islotes (islets) that form the Marine Reserve, providing views to a beautiful landscape that is still untouched
  • Jeep tours: For those wanting to cover more ground, authorized island tours are available
  • Sunset watching: The western beaches offer spectacular sunset views over the Atlantic

Winter Activities: Off-Season Bliss

Winter is actually La Graciosa’s best-kept secret! In winter an average of 17 °C (62.6°F) with a low likelihood of rain due to its dry, arid climate means you can enjoy the island without crowds.

  • Peaceful beach walks: Experience pristine beaches virtually to yourself
  • Bird watching: Winter brings different migratory species to the island
  • Photography expeditions: Dramatic winter light creates perfect conditions for capturing the volcanic landscape
  • Hiking: Cooler temperatures make exploring the island’s trails more comfortable
  • Stargazing: Clear winter skies and minimal light pollution create incredible conditions for astronomy

Events: Island Life Celebrations

Carnival Season

The carnival theme for 2025 is “The World of Television: Teguise in Prime Time” and festivities conclude in La Graciosa on the weekend of March 28. This celebration brings traditional Canarian culture with colorful costumes, music, and dancing.

Local Festivals

While La Graciosa maintains its tranquil character year-round, the island offers a variety of festivals and events throughout the year that reflect its rich culture and traditions. These typically include:

  • Traditional fishing festivals celebrating the island’s maritime heritage
  • Summer solstice celebrations
  • Local saints’ day observances
  • Cultural events showcasing Canarian music and dance

Entry Fees & Useful Info

Ferry Costs

Getting to paradise is surprisingly affordable:

  • Standard ferry ticket: €15 standard price
  • For Canary Islands residents: €7 round trip
  • For non-residents: €28 round trip
  • Children: Discounted rates available

Ferry Schedule

There are usually 16 daily ferry crossings from Lanzarote to La Graciosa. The earliest ferry usually leaves from Lanzarote at 08:00 and the last scheduled trip is at 20:00. The journey takes approximately 25-30 minutes from Órzola port.

Park Fees

The good news? There are no additional entry fees to the island since it’s all part of the natural park system. However, special activities like diving in the marine reserve may require permits.

Essential Tips

  • Bring cash: Card acceptance is limited outside main establishments
  • Pack sunscreen: The sun can be intense, especially when reflected off white sand and water
  • Water conservation: Seawater is desalinated on Lanzarote and piped under the channel to supply Graciosa: please use it sparingly
  • Book accommodation early: Limited options mean advance planning is essential
  • Respect nature: Stay on marked paths and don’t disturb wildlife

Final Thoughts

La Graciosa isn’t just a destination – it’s a reminder of what travel can be when we slow down and connect with nature. This little slice of paradise offers something increasingly rare in our hyper-connected world: the chance to truly disconnect and recharge.

Whether you’re seeking adventure in its pristine waters, tranquility on its untouched beaches, or simply a place where time moves at the speed of sunset, La Graciosa delivers. It’s proof that sometimes the best things really do come in small packages.

Pack light, bring your sense of wonder, and prepare to fall in love with an island that shows us how beautiful life can be when we strip away the unnecessary and focus on what really matters: crystal-clear waters, endless skies, and the simple joy of being present in paradise.
