Pyramiden is a semi-abandoned settlement located on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard , a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
Pyramiden is located on the Billefjord, an extension of the Isfjord, about one and a half to two hours by boat northeast of Longyearbyen, in the so-called Dickson Land. The place owes its name to the pyramid-like shape of the mountain of the same name, at the foot of which it lies. The settlement was abandoned in 1998, when there were around 300 inhabitants who were given four months to move elsewhere.
Pyramiden is currently being redeveloped by a mining company to accommodate tourists. Six people are currently stationed to improve the facilities and the local hotel was reopened in recent years , around 30 people have been living here in shifts to keep the settlement active (as well as to ensure the maintenance of the buildings), a small museum and a café have been added inside the hotel and near the port there is a small hostel made up of some containers. Today Pyramiden has become not only a tourist destination but also a useful base for excursions.
