The Vizcaya Bridge is a flying ferry across the Nervión River that connects the cities of Portugalete and Las Arenas (part of Getxo) in the province of Vizcaya, Spain.
The Biscay Transporter Bridge is the oldest bridge of this type, built in 1893 according to the design of the Basque architect Alberto de Palacio, one of Gustav Eiffel’s students.The bridge is in working order, its gondola transports 6 cars and several dozen passengers from one bank to the other in one and a half minutes.
On July 13, 2006, the transporter bridge was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. UNESCO considers the building to be one of the outstanding steel structures from the era of the Industrial Revolution – The bridge has been classified in Spain as an asset of cultural interest since July 17, 1984.
