The Old Town Hall is a medieval town hall in the episcopal city of Bamberg, a town in Upper Franconia district in Bavaria, Germany.
The town hall (Altes Rathaus) is unique in its kind. It was built on an artificial island on the Regnitz River. In the Middle Ages, the river divided the territory into city and bishop lands. For a long time there were disputes over whose property the town hall should be built. Creating an artificial island and building on it became a compromise solution to the problem.
The town hall was first mentioned in 1386, in the 15th century it was completed. The structure was supplemented with elements in the Baroque and Rococo styles, taking on a modern look. The town hall began to house a museum, which houses a rich collection of porcelain, donated to Bamberg by famous philanthropists Irene and Peter Ludwig.
Today the old town hall consists one of Bavaria’s most photographed historic landmarks and is widely accepted as one of Germany’s top tourist attractions.
